Theological Reflection:
“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God?” (1 Corinthians 6:19)
Churches, temples and holy places still get treated with respect most of the time. Most people walk carefully, aware of the atmosphere of prayer. A few would steal the candlesticks or daub graffiti on the walls, but not many. But many more wouldn’t stop at desecrating the body of a woman or child. A cautious estimate is that £3.25million is spent by men purchasing sex in Glasgow each year. That's just one city! How many times does that represent a temple being desecrated? Now multiply that across the country, across the world.
Many caring people in churches would be appalled and write letters to the press about the need for tougher laws if someone walked into St Paul’s Cathedral and threw paint around. Why is our silence so deafening when so much worse is done to women, children and men on a daily basis? Do we value other people, beautiful creations in God’s image, so little?
