VIOLENCE: RAPE

Comment

Rape is a horrendous crime because it is so incredibly personal and destructive. Both women and men are subjected to rape, and its effects on them and their loved ones can be felt psychologically, emotionally  and physically. While every individual’s response will be different, for many the effects of such violation (and usually the associated violence) can last a very long time, affecting relationships at the time and in the future.

Definitions

Under criminal law the definition of rape is the offence of forcing someone to submit to sexual intercourse against their will.

A dictionary definition is any violation or abuse.

Legislation

The conviction rate for rape in the UK – the lowest of all European countries – is just 5.7 per cent in 2005, down from 33 per cent in 1977.

Facts

Facts and Figures for recorded crime are available from the British Crime Survey. Offences of all types between 2002 and 2007 are displayed here.
