PIRATE COPIES

The globalisation of finance, industry and trade has led to all kinds of criminality, including intellectual property (IP) theft, occurring on a global scale. However finding evidence to back the extent and scale of the problem is difficult, due to the highly sophisticated crime networks operating in a way that is difficult to track, at best leaving trails of evidence that are murky or ambiguous. The economic impact in lost revenue, damage to legitimate business, and therefore the effect on employment, is difficult to accurately judge. However the UK Intellectual Property Office cites evidence from INTERPOL to suggest that those involved in pirating or counterfeiting crimes launder their huge profits to fund other crimes, including drugs, guns, people smuggling or human trafficking, even terrorism.
A number of newspaper reports describe the involvement of Triad and Snakehead gangs in forcing illegal immigrants from mainland China to sell pirate DVDs in the street, offices, pubs, in return for food and accommodation and to pay for their passage into the country.
