HUMAN RIGHTS

Theological Reflection
Following Christ we stand alongside all those who are marginalised and abused. We affirm that all have equal right to live their lives freely and without blemish or judgement. But for many today there is no opportunity to stand before those who accuse and imprison and in the clear light of day steadfastly seek out truth and grace. For many today there is no one who will stand alongside them, walk with them through the torments and degradation of exploitation and take them to a place of restorative justice. Places of anguish are so deceptively hidden that few of us know first hand what life really is like for those who are kept imprisoned, without food or clothing, without shelter or visitors of good intent. The walls that bind them are going to take a lot more than writing in the sand.
Christ's writing in the sand (see John 8.2-11) met the abusers of the woman taken in adultery with immediate and clear justice. If we believe we can play our part in redemptive justice then by attending to the human rights of all people we are helping to establish goodness, honesty and grace as a contribution to the holistic development of the world.
