Environment

The group considered 'push' and 'pull' factors that might cause people to find themselves ensnared in the nightmare of trafficking, and realised that even something as apparently unrelated as climate change could indeed be a 'push' factor.

Environmental degradation continues to create drought and desertification in some parts of the world and greater tendency for flooding and cyclones in others. People increasingly struggle to survive and to feed their families, particularly if they rely on agriculture to do so. As poverty worsens, desperate people become easier targets for traffickers offering them opportunities to either obtain a better life for themselves or sufficient income to feed their families.

Thus, if we are serious about creating a world in which trafficking cannot happen, we will need to also consider our own carbon footprints and our use of resources as stewards of the created earth. While our own consumption leaves others without enough to survive, we increase their vulnerability to those who would prey upon them.

Calculate your carbon footprint for your house and transport.

Take appliances into account as well.

Assess your organisation or company.

Why don’t you, or your church or other organisation, buy your electricity from a sustainable supplier such as Good Energy?

For ideas about saving energy and other initiatives, join the "generous community".
