Theological Reflection
What motivates the drug barons? The drive to have more money and more power?
The dealers? Maybe the money and access to drugs?
The addicts? Initially, perhaps, to escape into a glamorous world - of nice cars and fur coats - but eventually, simply to leave the problems behind and experience a warmth that envelops the body (see stories).
And, what motivates Christians in their faith? John 6:67-68 suggests that for Peter, the best and eternal experience of life was found in Jesus. Nevertheless, many people of faith face distress and difficulty in the Bible: For example, Psalm 4, the book of Job, and the journey of Jesus to the cross (Luke 22:44). There are also times when people want to escape from God (eg Jonah).
Is it possible to find meaning through a living faith even when life is weighed down with pain and distress?
The stories of God’s people speak not only of distress, but of compassion, hope and love, often in the face of terrible odds. The work of Betel with drug addicts and homeless people is overtly Christian, and just one example of an approach that offers an opportunity to refocus lives and discover new direction and meaning.
