CULTURES: Gender

Comment

As we started out on this project concerned with trafficking for the sex trade, it became apparent how much has to do with gender inequality. Primarily (though not exclusively – and certainly not when we also build in other forms of trafficking for other purposes) this is about the exploitation of women and girls by men. This raised difficult questions for men in the group and their roles in the fight against this many-tentacled monster when, by their gender, they somehow felt implicated; or at least part of a society that condones the inequalities that lead to the purchase of sex and the commodification of women. However women also need to consider whether they risk assuming stereotypes about men that are equally unjust. We all have a role to play in promoting healthy understandings of gender.
