BODY MATTERS

Theological Reflection

‘Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God? You are not your own; you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.’ (1 Corinthians 6.19-20)

And that body is one created in the image of God: ‘You created every part of me; you put me together in my mother’s womb.’ (Psalm 139.13).

Do we treat our bodies with the care that a temple deserves, glorifying God, or not? Is it treating it as a temple to submit it to cosmetic surgery, changing what God created?

Is it treating it as a temple to abuse it with poor diet, lack of exercise, excessive alcohol or drug use?

Even if we take care of or own bodies, do we extend the same care to another’s? Or do we expect them to be the ‘eye candy’ that raises our profile in certain circles?

Purchasing another human being for sex is not glorifying God in their body, is not treating them as a temple. And while many of us may not cross that threshold, are there other examples of a lack of care in our expectations of what is beauty and therefore those we dismiss, affected by media hype?

We may want to increase the focus on the Spirit resident within each human being and not spend too much time focussed on the body, but perhaps we do need to consider what is fitting care for the receptacle that holds such an important gift.
