Self sacrifice for others
Some people who have been trafficked relate stories of having felt under pressure to provide for their families, or to accept the opportunity to work in a different area or country because they would be able to provide for their loved ones. There may be a strong perception that families with members who worked abroad had money. Family members may even have persuaded them that this was too good an opportunity to miss, or that it was the only way out of a crisis situation. The individual may then feel that they are making the decision to migrate; that it is the best possible option for them and their family. For example, a woman may feel that, despite her reservations, agreeing to marry an older, wealthier man will mean that her family is paid a good dowry, and can be proud that she has married well; neither she nor her family realise that her 'husband' intends to force her to enter prostitution, or to sell her on to traffickers for an even greater sum.
