Power and Control A representative from the UKHTC described how the majority of women who have escaped trafficking situations (but particularly those from Eastern Europe) are intelligent, young women who have outgoing personalities and may be more open to taking risks in order to travel or make money. It seems to them to be an opportunity to take control of their own lives and future. A few women may be aware that they will be working in strip clubs or massage parlours, but see it as a worthwhile risk to take, because the money they are told they will earn will very quickly pay for better accommodation and opportunities for family back home, and have no idea of the reality of the conditions under which they will be forced to work. Some trafficked people may be forced into duping others in return, or may see their only resort in becoming traffickers and seizing that opportunity of power themselves.
