Poverty
Women who are recruited by promises of legal employment are led to believe they can travel to a rich western country and earn large amounts of money in a short period of time, which they can use to move themselves and their families out of poverty and despair.
Traffickers target those who are already vulnerable to abuse and exploitation because of economic, political, social and cultural disadvantage. Those particularly at risk are not often the very poorest, ie those who are ill, elderly or malnourished, but people who appear attractive, young, and healthy. They take advantage of the despair that people feel at not being able to provide for their families, or to achieve their ambitions, and of the risks many feel prepared to take in order to look outside their immediate area or country of origin for the chance of a better life.
We were told of a ploy by traffickers in Romania, duping university students with suggestions of being able to travel and to earn enough to cover the costs of their studies by, for example, working in McDonalds in London.
