8 million lives could be saved annually for an annual investment of $57 billion in basic health interventions, and the cost of attaining the Millennium Development Goals has been estimated at $135 billion. These levels of investment can be compared with $290bn from the top 100 global firms’ arms sales or the level of world military expenditure, which amounted to $1204 billion in 2006.

According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, military expenditure was $1339 billion in 2007, an increase of 6% from 2006 and 45% since 1998. More detailed information here.
While the USA is the biggest spender, (nearly ten times more than the second largest spender, UK), several countries (UK, France, Saudi Arabia and Australia) spend more per capita.
The USA is also the biggest arms dealer to majority world countries.
